How to Perfume Your Home With Essential Oils

Essential oils come from plants. They are obtained by distillation with steam or pressure.
Good smells contribute directly to our feeling of well-being. Perfume your interior is a way to make it even more welcoming and warm. Using essential oils is a natural and healthy solution to embalm the whole house.

The term “essential oil” is thrown about every day, with a wide range of meanings. There are no standardized regulations for use of the words “essential oil” or “essence,” so they are often used to describe any number of products that have little or nothing to do with the real thing or meaning.

Essential oils, what is it?
Essential oils come from plants. They are obtained by distillation with steam or pressure. (This is particularly the case for citrus fruits whose oil is extracted by squeezing their bark.) They are healthier to breathe than synthetic perfumes.

They are naturally derived, and should be respected as powerful substances to be used with caution and education. Pure essential oils are extracted directly from different parts of plants, depending on the oil concerned. Some are extracted from flowers, others from leaves, stems, the rind of fruit, berries, resin, or roots using a variety of extraction methods.

Some precautions are necessary
If the essential oils are natural , their active ingredient is real and it is necessary to be well informed before using each one of them, in order to avoid any complication.

Always look for pure essential oils packaged in full, dark glass bottles, preferably with built-in droppers. These allow you to dispense the oil one drop at a time. Some oils are more viscous than others and may take a while to drop out. Some companies have adjusted the size of the dropper or bottle-neck accordingly. You can also use a separate glass eyedropper, but do not store it in the bottle because the oil will eventually break down the rubber bulb at the top, which will then contaminate the oil.

Read the label carefully. Look for the term “pure essential oil” and for cautions such as “Keep out of reach of children,” and “For external use only.” Seeing these warnings on a bottle is a sign of a responsible company that understands the effects of its product.

 How to diffuse essential oils?
Pour two or three drops of essential oils directly on a silica roller, or a tissue. This technique is sufficient to perfume small rooms (such as toilets) or drawers. Mint is ideal to refresh the atmosphere of the little corner ... Good to know, spread lavender or cypress oil away mites.

Spray with a spray
Very simple too, just a few pschitts to perfume a room for a few hours. Feel free to direct your spray to the curtains or a plaid fabric . They retain good odors! Some citrus-based sprays purify the air and others (orange and cinnamon-based) create an immediate feeling of well-being.

The electric diffuser with soft heat
There are several types of electric diffusers. It heats your oil (without exceeding 40° C, 104° F) and spreads its fragrance. Little by little, under the effect of heat, the volatile aromatic particles are propelled into the atmosphere. This type of diffuser is suitable for a room of less than 20 square meters.

The mist diffuser (Vaporizer)
Concretely we fill his container with water, we add a few drops of essential oils and the mist that comes out is deliciously scented. The visual effect created by the mist is very pretty and this type of diffuser is effective to perfume a large living room.

Which oils to choose to scent the house?

Which oils to choose to scent the house?
Everyone to his own tastes! Citrus fruits or mint bring a touch of freshness. Eucalyptus is ideal in winter to help fight germs.

In summer, lemongrass, cedar, lemon eucalyptus and geranium have the distinction of removing insects such as mosquitoes ... Some oils have relaxing virtues such as lavender, bergamot, petit-grain, or lemon 'ylang-ylang ... It's up to you to feel and choose!

If you want to combine the use of several oils without being fooled, there are synergy bottles that mix several oils in a balanced way. They are ready to be used to create a rather relaxing, anti-stress or purifying atmosphere.

A delightful way to scent a room, free of the dust or smoke that can be caused by incense, is to use an oil burner, or aromatic diffuser. Alternatively, a few drops of oil can be placed on a light bulb ring or added to a small bowl of water placed on a radiator. Specific oils can be chosen to create different atmospheres: frankincense and cedarwood have been used traditionally in a ritual context, to create a peaceful and relaxed mood. Vaporized oils such as citronella or lemongrass also provide an excellent way of keeping insects at bay or clearing the air of unwanted smells like cigarette smoke.

At one time, the leaves of juniper and rosemary were burnt to help control epidemics and purify the air. Such oils can help keep the enviroment free of germs and inhibit the development of infections like the common cold or ’flu. An oil such as myrtle or eucalyptus can be used in the bedroom at night to help clear breathing difficulties or children’s coughs. A few drops may also be put on the pillow or onto a handkerchief for use throughout the day. Always ensure that the oil burner is in a safe place and out of reach of children or pets.

 Essential Oil Safety Tips
  • Dispense by the drop, carefully, and count. Record your recipe accurately.
  • Dilute, dilute, dilute. Very seldom is an oil used “neat” or undiluted.
  • Be careful where you set your essential oil bottles and wipe them clean first. Essential oils can mar surfaces, especially plastic ones. Always make sure bottle caps are twisted on securely.
  • Practice aromatic etiquette. Many scents may be perceived as offensive to others. Use essential oils and perfumes in moderation in public, and check with family members to make sure your precious vapors aren’t causing anyone else distress because of allergies, asthma, or just personal preference.
  • Label everything — for your own convenience and others’ safety. Clearly label and put up away from children any potentially harmful substances. Labeling is a great chance to be creative, too.
And you, which essential oil do you prefer?. Give your opinion in the comments!
